Mill Valley contractor project
Mill Valley · Marin County

Mill Valley
general contractor.

Mill Valley is one of Marin's hardest places to build well. Hillsides, narrow lots, ridge ordinances, design review, and an aging housing stock that hides surprises behind every wall. We've built here for two decades, and we'd rather work in Mill Valley than almost anywhere else.

Why Mill Valley is its own thing.

The classic Mill Valley home is wood-framed on a hillside, often built in the 1920s through 1970s, with tongue-and-groove redwood, single-pane windows, and structural connections that pre-date modern seismic code. Layered on top of that is one of Marin's most rigorous design review processes and a residential ordinance that protects ridgelines, viewsheds, and mature oak trees.

Building well here means understanding the original construction, working with current code without losing the home's character, navigating the city's planning department, and respecting the trees and topography that make the town what it is. That's a different skill set than building on a flat lot in a tract subdivision.

Mill Valley neighborhoods we work in.

Tam Valley

Mid-century homes on the flats and hillsides east of Tam Junction.

Strawberry

Waterfront and hillside homes. Older redwoods and contemporary rebuilds.

Homestead Valley

Some of the most varied housing in town. Steep lots, character homes.

Sycamore Park

Family-scale homes near the park. Often bath / kitchen / addition projects.

Downtown / Old Mill Park

Historic homes near the depot. Significant design review.

Cascade Canyon · Mt Tam

The high hillsides. Ridge ordinance, geotech, and serious access logistics.

Mill Valley FAQ.

Do you handle hillside permits in Mill Valley? +
Yes. Most of Mill Valley is in some flavor of hillside, ridge, or stream-conservation overlay. We've pulled permits in Tam Valley, Homestead Valley, Sycamore Park, and the upper hillsides around Mt. Tam — we know what the planning department wants to see and how to navigate the geotech requirements.
Can you work with the Mill Valley design review process? +
Yes. Many Mill Valley neighborhoods require design review for any meaningful exterior change. We coordinate with your architect (or ours) on the design-review submittal and represent the project at hearings when needed.
Are you familiar with Mill Valley's older housing stock? +
Very. The older Mill Valley homes — early-century craftsman, mid-century redwood, the 1970s contemporary builds in Tam Valley — each have their own structural quirks. Two generations of working in this town means we know what's behind the walls before we open them.
